This story will help to better understand what PayPal is, how to communicate with it in Ukraine, what it offers and whether I will use this service in my own life. This text is about how I created a new account and how I tried to enter it for six months.

The desire to use this payment system appeared at the beginning of the year, when financial transactions, due to the full-scale war in my country, radically changed their direction from east to west. In Europe and the USA, all over the world know about PayPal and use it successfully. I also decided to register, because somehow our paths did not cross before that.

Getting started with PayPal

So, I created an account using my PC. Here everything is simple and went without problems. I installed two-factor authentication, because I do it almost everywhere there is such an opportunity. I saw the inscription, the message “2-step verification was turned on for your account”. Well, I thought it’s all right.

I log into my account and in order to do this, I need to enter a 6-digit code from Google Authenticator. I make a PayPal entry in the corresponding application, go to the site again, write my login and password, they tell me that I need a code “Enter your code, Enter the 6-digit security code from your authenticator app.”

I feel free to write these 6 characters from the app, but they don’t fit.

And it says “we can’t confirm that it’s you”.

Really?

I try to enter the 6-digit code from Google Authenticator several times, but the situation did not change. They didn’t let me in.

First problems with PayPal

I decided to change the account password. I change it (this can be done through mail), log in and again it says “Enter your code, Enter the 6-digit security code from your authenticator app.” I’m writing this code again with GA, but it’s still the same.

Here I come up with a brilliant idea to delete the Authenticator so that double verification takes place via sms, two numbers are specified in the profile.

I removed PayPal from the app, but the request for the code remains.

That is, it turns out that after installing double authorization, I cannot log into my account, because the application (or something else) does not work as it should, there was no other way to change this situation.

Absurdity in PayPal

In order to contact the support service, I need to log in (!).

There is nothing in the FAQ about this, you just need to call on the phone.

When I enter random numbers instead of the ones offered by the application, I receive the following “There’s an issue with the code you entered. Let’s try that again.” 

That is, here they say frankly that these numbers are delusional.

And here the interesting part begins, they offer me “Log in and get a one time passcode so we can identify you more quickly”. You just need to log in (really?), and for log in, you need to enter 6 valid numbers, but these numbers do not work.

Continuation of the story with PayPal. Six months have passed

That was the end of the first relationship part with PayPal. 

I spent several hours on this process (because I was looking on the Internet for how to solve this issue, maybe someone has encountered this), but without results. I just closed all windows with this site and didn’t come back until recently. I didn’t want to call them at all, because there was a war outside the window (link to the main article), every penny was on the account, nervous tension was on the verge, I went to look for more attractive alternatives.

As of this writing (about six months since the story began), I decided to go back into my account just to check and you know what? Text immediately appeared on my screen “Enter your one-time password that we sent to your mobile”. I received my one-time code, wrote it in the field and entered my personal account. Immediately set “Security Questions. We’ll use these questions as a way to make sure it’s your account, like if you need to reset your password” and now, I hope I won’t have to spend more time getting into my account.

Conclusions about PayPal

I haven’t decided yet whether I will actively use it in my life, but its popularity and recognition is tempting, so we’ll see.

This is the story of a six-month relationship, which in words looks rather silly and crumpled, but it is what it is. The service has stopped in development and in terms of interface and level of service provision resembles the year 2000. There are many negative reviews about it, and my attitude is still neutral and biased. Perhaps in the future, everything will be fine and there will be no problems, especially with money transactions.
