This movie review will likely be concise because I didn’t enjoy the film. I watched it for a second time since my initial viewing a few years ago, which brought back some memories, but not the details. I wanted to refresh my memory and come to a final conclusion about the movie Black Butterfly (2017).
The film lacks many elements that would make it worthy of being called a good movie. Even Antonio Banderas, whom I personally admire as an actor, couldn’t rescue this story from its failure.
Why?
While watching, numerous questions starting with “Why…” kept arising in my mind. Each subsequent question gradually eroded the appeal of the film, leading to my overall negative assessment.
There are too many logical and technical mistakes, a complete lack of depth and meaningful background, and a definite failure with the soundtrack and musical accompaniment.
Black Butterfly (2017) is a complete absurdity, and its only saving grace is the ending, which attempts to justify all the mistakes. However, it does so in an incredibly unfortunate manner.
A Film About Writer
Black Butterfly (2017) is indeed a film about an author, novelist, and screenwriter who experiences writer’s block. This is a relevant topic for many persons of letters, but this aspect is hardly explored here. The story revolves around a writer, so it’s only logical that it falls into my extensive list of films about authors.
The film touches on a surprisingly limited number of important topics, they are not here at all, apart from the theme of alcohol.
Emptiness
Black Butterfly (2017) is an empty movie that can be enjoyed over a glass of beer in the company of intoxicated friends. It is simple, superficial, and intended to completely disengage the brain. Perhaps then one can derive some genuine pleasure from it.
The main problem lies in the extremely flawed script. It’s not surprising, considering that none of the three screenwriters can boast of notable works, and for one of them, it was his first experience altogether.
The main idea has potential, but the result fails to excite, interest, or captivate. Instead, it distracts and disappoints, wasting the viewer’s time.
There is an absolute void of positive emotions after watching it.
I deducted three points solely for the shoes worn on wet feet; need I mention the other shortcomings?
So?
This movie review is brief, so it won’t delve into full-fledged conclusions. I’ve expressed everything as succinctly as possible, attempting to avoid spoiling anything.
I didn’t enjoy the movie Black Butterfly (2017), although I watched it with some interest.
With each subsequent disappointment, I hoped more and more for redemption, something to hold onto, a lifeline.
However, apart from the high-quality visuals (the cinematography is quite good) and a commendable performance by Antonio Banderas, there was nothing that grabbed my attention.
I’ll give it a third point for building intrigue that ultimately didn’t meet expectations.
You can watch it, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s an empty, absurd film about nothing.
My rating for the movie Black Butterfly (2017) is 3 out of 10
