I initially hesitated to watch “Anonymous Authors” due to its low rating, but curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to form my own opinion and add another film about writers to my big list. From the outset, the authors portrayed in the film struck me as odd and off-putting. Despite my initial impulse to switch it off, I persisted out of habit.

These characters aren’t just authors; they represent different groups of writers who haven’t found success and seem unlikely to change their circumstances. They engage passionately within the “Anonymous Authors” group, discussing their works, characters, and sharing ideas while grappling with criticism and writer’s block.

The film unfolds as a narrative of repentance and candid dialogue, albeit poorly executed. The concept holds great potential: exploring the flaws and limitations that hinder writers from achieving success. It touches on themes of luck, insular communities, ignorance, narcissism, as well as love and betrayal.

Authors Anonymous (2014)
A shot from the movie “Anonymous Authors” (2014)

A cocktail of genres

One part of the film adopts an open documentary style, featuring interactions with the camera and the film crew, while the other part follows a traditional narrative, resembling a fictional movie.

This cinematic schizophrenia wouldn’t be as bothersome if it weren’t for the poorly executed delivery.

I would have gladly watched either a purely artistic film or one entirely in a documentary style. This idiotic mishmash serves no purpose.

Failed jokes

The failed attempts at humor are abundant and constant throughout the film, becoming somewhat predictable over time. However, their existence cannot be ignored. Screenwriter David Congalton could easily have been a part of the cast in “Anonymous Authors” (2014), as he doesn’t seem much different from the unsuccessful writers depicted. Yet, some of them do achieve success. However, the film doesn’t play out their journey and methods as either commendable or condemnatory; this interpretational freedom only adds to the coffin of disappointment.

Another promising idea buried.

Conclusions

In conclusion, there’s little desire to dissect its components further. Hence, this review of “Anonymous Authors” remains succinct.

The actors perform admirably, with a well-chosen cast. However, the music falls flat. The film possesses a certain mood and remains somewhat engaging, but there are too many irritations throughout.

Success and recognition come to those who take action, who keep moving forward. It’s found by those who seek it. How unexpected.
